Katatonia & War (Black) Metal aus Amerika: Die schwedischen Legenden Katatonia sind seit über 30 Jahren Meister darin, melancholische Soundlandschaften zu erschaffen. Ging es früher noch rauer und ruppiger zur Sache, nähern sich die Herren langsam einer perfekten Symbiose aus metallischen und Pop-artigen Trauersounds an. Herausgekommen ist mit „Sky Void Of Stars“ eine besondere Tonspur des Verfalls, die zu Recht auch unseren Soundcheck gewonnen hat. Im Gespräch mit Niklas Sandin sowie Jonas Renkse und dem Cover-Künstler Roberto Bordin finden wir alles über die neue Scheibe heraus. Quasi als Gegenpol zu den sanften Tönen haben wir uns für die neue Ausgabe auf einen Grenzgang gewagt und thematisieren auf neun Seiten die Verbindung zwischen Krieg und (Black) Metal. Warum sind Kriegsbilder und -metaphern so wichtig in der harten Musikrichtung? Wo geht es um Schock und Provokation? Wo um ernsthafte Reflexion in der Kunst? Was hat es mit scheinbaren Werten wie Heldenmut, Glorie und so weiter auf sich? Gemeinsam mit unseren Gesprächspartnern Yosuke (Nuclear War Now!), James Bresnahan (Kommandant), Brock Van Dijk (Panzerfaust) und vielen mehr haben wir versucht, dies aufzuarbeiten. Damit nicht genug! Sowohl Eisregen als auch Atrocity und Memoriam liefern bockstarke neue Scheiben ab, weshalb wir alle drei Bands zum ausführlichen Gespräch baten. Natürlich haben wir uns auch sonst vieles zur Brust genommen, was diesen Winter erscheint. So reisen wir mit Tarja Turunen (Ex-Nightwish) im Kontext ihres ersten Best-Of-Albums durch die finnische Kälte, fragen In Flames, wie Metal ihr neues Werk geworden ist, und stellen fest, dass die amerikanischen Death-Metaller Obituary mal wieder richtig was vorgelegt haben. Außerdem: Freut Euch über die ersten größeren Festival-Vorberichte für den kommenden Sommer – es wird einige alte und neue (Tolminator!) Highlights geben!

Katatonia & War (Black) Metal from the new continent: For over 30 years, the Swedish legends Katatonia have undoubtedly been masters in creating melancholic soundscapes. While in the early days everything was rawer and more abrasive, the guys are slowly but surely arriving at a perfect symbiosis between metallic and poppy songs of sadness. With “Sky Void Of Stars”, Katatonia, thus, created a unique soundtrack of decay which also won the soundcheck of this issue – rightly so! In the interview with Niklas Sandin and Jonas Renkse as well as with the cover artist Roberto Bordin, we learnt everything there is to know about the new album. As an antipole to these calmer sounds, we dared to thematize a very different topic on nine full pages, namely the connection between war and (Black) Metal. Why are pictures and metaphors of war so important in our Metal genre? Is it about shock and provocation? Is it about serious reflection? Why do we think highly of “values” like valor, glory, loyalty and so forth? Together with our dialogue partners Yosuke (Nuclear War Now!), James Bresnahan (Kommandant), Brock Van Dijk (Panzerfaust) and many more we tried to reach a conclusion. But that is not enough! Eisregen, Atrocity and Memorian each deliver a very strong album, so we took the time to talk extensively with these three cult bands. Of course, we also thoroughly checked what releases this coming winter has to offer. We talk with Tarja Turunen (ex Nightwish) about her first best-of album and travel through the Finnish coldness. We ask In Flames how much Metal there is to be found on their new album. And we assert that the US Death Metalheads from Obituary managed to deliver a powerful new longplayer. Besides: You may look forward to the first bigger festival announcements and presentations in this issue; some old and some new (Tolminator!) highlights are incoming!
